Circular Economy

CUKI PRODUCTS ARE MADE USING SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS.

This helps to safeguard both the environment and natural resources.

Aluminium

Aluminium is a metal with unique characteristics: it can be recycled fully and endlessly without the packaging losing its original qualities.

Unlike other materials, recycled aluminium returns to its original form and is safe for contact with food.

Additionally, recycling aluminium has environmental advantages and economic benefits: the production of recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy compared to the amount required to produce it from primary aluminium.

Thanks to this practice, in Italy alone the energy savings in 2018 were above 173,000 tonnes of oil equivalent, avoiding the emission of 403,000 tons of the greenhouse gas CO2.

With regard to the aluminium recycling industry, Italy has a starring role in the world stage – after the USA and Japan, Italy is the third country in the world (with Germany) in terms of quantities of recycled aluminium.

68.7% of the aluminium entering the market in Italy is recycled (from CIAL 2020 data).

Polyethylene

All our PE products are recyclable if disposed of correctly in plastic recycling bins.

The Domopak Spazzy and Domopak Professional bin liners are one of our top products owing to the fact that they are produced using between 100% and 60% recycled PE.

OUR PE RECYCLING PROCESS IS UNIQUE AND PATENTED.

The exclusive production process makes it possible to obtain a high-quality recycled raw material, comparable to its virgin counterpart.

Polyethylene recycled per year:

5,000 tons.

  • A quantity that could cover the city of Florence one and a half times and 50,000 times the surface of the Colosseum.
  • with CO2 savings equating to the emissions of 82,000 train journeys per passenger from Milan to Naples.

Biodegradable Plastic

Cuki Cofresco has entered into a technical partnership with BiowareSrl – a spin-off of an R&D engineering department of the University of Rome, specialised in the design and development of innovative compostable biopolymeric compounds for food packaging applications;

Bioware has developed a range of compostable and heat-resistant compounds for mono-material packaging applications (Almablend, patent pending), based on PLA;

The production of compostable materials will allow Cuki Cofresco to control a closed-loop production cycle, from resin to tray.

The compostable resin, which is currently undergoing a process of continuous development in the Pontinia laboratory, being suitable for thermo-forming, injection and blown film applications, will widen the industrial market presided over thus far (the compostable resin could, for instance, potentially be used for coffee capsules).

Baking Paper

Our baking paper is made from mechanically-treated virgin cellulose fibre derived from timber from sustainably-managed forests.

The process guarantees a tight bond between the fibres, so as to create a dense and natural barrier on the paper made from pure cellulose. This helps to make it biodegradable, recyclable and compostable.

Our baking paper is natural, environmentally-sustainable and free from the addition of fluorochemicals. All of our baking paper products are therefore approved by an external research institute.

Achievments

In 2018, Cuki was selected as one of the top 100 Italian companies in terms of commitment to the circular economy.
